In 1934 ‘Klavierübung’ (Piano Practice) by Carl Orff was published in the ‘OrffSchulwerk’ series (ED 3561). Here he combines many years of experience in teaching piano and improvisation. In the preface, he writes:
‘The little book is above all a beginners’ melody book.
The melodies — which are very close to childrens folk and dancing songs — should first be played alone, alternating hands or with both hands together. [...] The simple accompanying parts [...) should be expanded and elaborated.
The little pieces — which may easily be put together to form suites — are repeated from time to time in stanzas, and should be performed with varying interpretations. One should strive for a lively flowing performance.’
Bearing this in mind — having had many years’ collaboration with Carl Orff— I have chosen individual pieces from this book and arranged them for brass.
The tempo indications were made by Carl Orff himself. Suggestions of the arranger are marked in brackets.
