Composed by 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winner Kevin Puts, Charm is a short, joyful piece written in the meter 7/8. Of the title, Puts writes, “I decided to call it Charm because, for me, the music conjures up magic, good-luck charms and such, and I was also thinking of the other meaning of the word, that intangible quality possessed by certain people and places that truly can cast a spell.”

As the title might imply, this unique composition contains several references to the number 5. For starters, the meter of 5/4 is an obvious connection. More subtle is the prominent use of the interval of a fifth, and also only five different pitches used throughout the entire work excerpt for two measures near the end. Even though Fivefold is composed using single tempo, the variety in textures and moods makes this particularly appealing. Dur: 4:00

Inspired by a trip to Honolulu, this music embodies the “aloha spirit” that so many discover when visiting the islands of Hawaii. Making use of a wealth of authentic percussion instruments (along with many options for substitutions), the piece truly captures the bright spirit of Hawaii. An optional ukulele part is cued in other instruments, and the piece concludes with a powerful rendition of Hawaii Aloha, an anthem of great pride to those who live in Hawaii. Magical! (4:45)
