This gem from 1985 has steadily become one of the classic repertoire pieces for young bands. Even though it is heavily cross-cued making it suitable for smaller bands, this beautiful work is rich in melodic content, varied scoring, and marvelous counterlines and harmonies. An effective performance vehicle that also teaches legato style and musical sensitivity.
Once again Richard Saucedo has created an overture that focuses on brassy fanfares, exciting concert percussion, and tuneful themes coupled with skilled counterline writing. Bands everywhere love to program this type of energetic opener-style overture that is an attention getter from the opening downbeat.
Commissioned for the All Iowa Middle School Honor Band, here is an exuberant work that features dynamic ensemble passages, layering effects, and extensive percussion scoring. Richard's masterful development of repetitive rhythmic motives makes this sound more difficult than it really is. A contrasting middle section uses brief solos for alto sax and flute over a rich harmonic texture. A powerful statement for band.
Music has power to help us heal and cope with the loss of loved ones. Using the beloved traditional Scottish ballad The Parting Glass combined with an original new melody, here is a beautifully paced and sensitive musical memorial with a Celtic flavor. A key element of this work is the use of Highland bagpipes. If a pipe player is not available, this part is cued in multiple parts throughout the band (or use a synthesizer with bagpipe patch). A moving tribute for any memorial.
