In 1879 Johannes Brahms was given a degree of Doctor of Philosophy by the University of Breslau. For this special occasion, Brahms composed his Academic Festival Overture in an expression of gratitude to the university.
The entire overture is based on musical themes and ideas taken from a collection of German student songs. These songs represent many styles and moods and capture the spirit of the student body of the university. The best known of these songs is presented in a grand finale that draws the overture to an exciting conclusion.
This arrangement is designed as a telescopic view of the entire overture. All of the original thematic material is presented in its original order, with some limitations placed upon the development sections.
The spirit of Charles Ives comes alive in this wacky and clever American-style circus march! Featuring snippets of many patriotic favorites intertwined with a wealth of original material, layered harmonies and rhythms, this is a highly entertaining and unique work that works equally well as a march, festival work, or closer! (2:45)
Once again Richard Saucedo has created an overture that focuses on brassy fanfares, exciting concert percussion, and tuneful themes coupled with skilled counterline writing. Bands everywhere love to program this type of energetic opener-style overture that is an attention getter from the opening downbeat.

This original overture demonstrates a sense of lightness and buoyancy. The title is borrowed from the sprite-like character in William Shakespeare's "The Tempest." A spirit whose name is derived from "air," Ariel is capricious, ethereal, and mischievous---adjectives that apply to this piece. A cherished new addition to the repertoire!

Atlantic Overture is a sparkling piece symbolising a journey by ship from Europe to the Americas. The music tells the story of a ship leaving the European coast on a journey that depicts the beauty of the open sea and the sunlight on the horizon. Finally, the main theme returns in a brilliant ending that heralds the arrival in America.
Commissioned for the All Iowa Middle School Honor Band, here is an exuberant work that features dynamic ensemble passages, layering effects, and extensive percussion scoring. Richard's masterful development of repetitive rhythmic motives makes this sound more difficult than it really is. A contrasting middle section uses brief solos for alto sax and flute over a rich harmonic texture. A powerful statement for band.

Grade 3.0 Duration 3:00
A cantastoria or Bänkelsänger – German for busker – was a travelling musician who made music in streets and squares, together with his colleagues. Die Bänkelsängerlieder (buskers songs) originally stem from the seventeenth century. Robert van Beringen, who is known for his attractive arrangements of classical melodies, created a colourful transcription for wind band based on this characteristic music.

This piece was composed in 2009 for a commission by Shinjuku Bunka Center to commemorate its thirty years since its opening.
It is an impressive work with a brilliant, bright fanfare, and the stately sound of the church organ reverberating through the concert hall. The first performance was given by Hiroko Takahashi, a house organist of the center, with Shinjuku City Wind Orchestra conducted by Shigeto Ishizu. Original works for church organ and wind orchestra are surprisingly scarce. This is a fresh opening piece, to be followed by an organ solo which might lead to a march.
