This spectacular work by trumpet virtuoso Allen Vizzutti features your trumpet soloist in the jazz idiom without losing accessibility to your Concert Band students. The opening begins with a trumpet cadenza using half valves, bending notes and timbre changes accompanied by stop chords in the band. An easy swing section follows with a groove established by the low brass, low woodwinds and percussion. The up tempo second movement features the soloist using a plunger mute. There's great interplay between the soloist and band in this exciting feature for your star trumpet player!

Emerald Skies was composed for Bandmaster Ross Johnson and the Camberwell Citadel Band of the Salvation Army; it was recorded on their album “Equilibrium”. The piece is a beautiful solo that gives the opportunity for the soloist to show off their lyrical playing and sound to the full. The tempo of the solo is marked as 100 beats per minute, which keeps the music moving throughout.
Emerald Skies can be played as a flugel horn solo or a cornet solo, and with that in mind, the flugel part within the ensemble can be omitted if the flugel player is the soloist. A rare opportunity happens at one point during the piece where the soloist is given a choice of two melody lines to play. One line shows off the soloist's range as it soars from a top C in minims, the other line is a quaver melody that centres around a high G. The soloist simply picks one of the lines to play leaving the other but on another performance they might wish to swap them around.
I think Emerald Skies is a lovely melody, and I hope performers and audience members enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed composing it.

This work was commissioned by the Osaka Kyoiku University Wind Orchestra. The world premiere took place with trumpet soloist, Osamu Kumashiro and was conducted by the composer, who was inspired by the famous Ponte Vecchio (the old bridge) during a visit to Florence.
The solo part can also be performed on euphonium or alto saxophone.

Preludio and Andante in Swing for Flugel Horn or Trumpet and Concert Band

Raffaello Sanzio, better known simply as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect of the High Renaissance. His paintings have been admired and imitated for centuries, and his architectural works have had a considerable influence. He is seen as one of the finest painters in the history of Western art, as well the supreme master of preliminary drawings for his numerous projects. Raphael’s works have always been appreciated and studied, and are regarded as jewels of academic art.
This composition is inspired by the great painter and his dazzling works, but also the composer’s own brother, Rafael, or Rafa, to who this piece is dedicated. With its entertaining Andante in Swing and peaceful Preludio, we have a rich picture of a generous, understanding and loving person wholly dedicated to music teaching, particularly to younger children. Thanks to his many qualities, the young pupils enrich their musical faculties and broaden their knowledge.
Like a well chosen metaphor, Raphael is dedicated to Rafa, whose great achievement is in stimulating and educating the young – and not so young – through his remarkable work at the Allegro Centro Musical (Valencia, Spain), with the aim of providing them with a solid musical training in order to become good musicians and well-adjusted people.
