Appalachian Morning acknowledges these pioneers with a musical walk through the woods and mountains of the Cumberland Gap. In addition to providing solo opportunities for several players, this lovely composition allows for a moment of reflection and lyrical expression on any concert program.

Simple, yet elegant and graceful, "Blue" is a lyrical work by Robert W. Smith for the developing concert band. Beautiful harmonic changes rooted in the language of American jazz make "Blue" a rich educational experience on many levels. With its poignant melody and beautiful chordal setting, "Blue" is appropriate for any concert or festival performance.
The Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa is known for writing beautiful and colourful melodies. This moving slow piece is suitable as a warm-up piece or a quiet moment in your concert programme. It also allows you to work on intonation, phrasing and musicality.
This melodic hymn begins with a lyrical melody, handled by various instrument groups. After a gradual build, a first climax is reached, in which the brass instruments give full vent to their glorious sound in jubilation. Now we hear a second theme, resounding in the euphoniums, which ushers in a moment of rest. Then the excitement gathers again, building to a great tutti. The main theme is taken up once more, sounding now as a kind of universal gratitude.

This lullaby honors this "living moon," portraying various emotions including the loneliness of seeing us from space. This contemporary lyrical work gets away from the typical ballad written for bands at this level. Instead, thick harmonies and wonderful textures become the canvas of this amazingly artistic work that is quite approachable for young bands, yet very appropriate for mature bands as well. Striking musical moments and subtle effects may actually make this the most memorable piece on your program. Inspirational!
Premiered by Funabashi Hiagshi High School under the direction of Shinichiro Tagawa in March, 2015, Sentimentale is an excerpt from Yagisawa’s Trumpet Concerto. That work, commissioned by the Japan Air Self-Defense Force Central Band with trumpet soloist Kenichi Kurishu, premiered in 2003 with many subsequent performances. In 2013, the Concerto had its U.S. debut with Kagoshima Joho HS and Robert Sullivan, principal trumpet of the Cincinnati Symphony. I received many warm regards and compliments on the work, especially for the second movement. However, I also heard regrets that the interlude required a trumpet soloist. I remembered the words of Mr. Tagawa, who had collaborated with me on works such as“And Then the Ocean Glows” and“Hymn to the Infinite Sky”. Ten years earlier he suggested that I arrange that movement for full band so that it could be more widely enjoyed. Though I agreed then, only now have I had the chance to realize this idea, as Mr. Tagawa presented me with the opportunity of this musical creation and world premier.
This new arrangement was entitled “Sentimentale” by Mr. Tagawa. I composed the piece with his constant consultation, discussing grade level and instrumentation, and how the work should be a chorale etude for both concert and daily training. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to both Mr. Tagawa and Funabashi Higashi High School.

Just one of the best slow tunes ever arranged for band. School bands can make a great job of it, while bands of greater ability will enjoy it too. A Spiritual, and so beautifully voiced for wind band by Fred J. Allen - Highly recomended repertoire.
“My Lord What a Morn in” is one of many anonymous spirituals sung in the fields and in worship by African-American slaves in the 19th century. In this setting, sonorities of the band are utilized which express a longing for the end of time, when there would be no sorrow, no pain. The last line of the refrain serves as the title for this setting.
