The South African folk classic Siyahamba is authentically treated in this special arrangement for young band. Repeating percussion patterns using tom toms, bass drum, claves, and cowbell keep the African feel moving while syncopated block harmonies round out the accompaniment. Trumpets and flutes get to shine on the opening melody, and in typical African call and response tradition, everyone gets to join in as the arrangement progresses. Correlated to Accent on Achievement, Book 2, page 23.

Anthem of Liberty is introduced with a warm major-key chorale presented by the woodwinds and then again by the brass. This leads to an intense second presentation in the relative minor, featuring exciting rhythmic motives passed from section to section. Following a dynamic transition, the initial chorale is again presented in a majestic manner over the driving double-time percussion and is complemented with active woodwind countermelodies. From the sensitive introduction to the stirring conclusion, this piece provides many expressive opportunities for the young musicians. (2:40)

Autumn is always an exciting time of the year for children as they head back to school and fall sports. For the composer John O'Reilly, autumn is a special time because of the dramatic colors that dot the Adirondack Mountains in New York State. Summer is over and autumn is the lovely season that precedes the harsh winter to come. Autumn Colors is set in a natural minor tonality and features flowing melodic lines from all the winds. This lyrical ballad portrays the warm feelings the composer experiences when the leaves put on their yearly display of beautiful colors. (2:20) Correlates with Book 2. Page 13

"Desperta Ferro!," or "Awake the iron!" was the battle cry of Medieval Spanish soldiers called the Almogavars. In the dim light of dawn, as they prepared for battle, these fierce soldiers would beat their swords on rocks shouting this phrase. The sparks that flew from the rocks in the eerie light of dawn, together with the soldier's call to arms, would give any enemy pause. Awake the Iron, with its insistent unisons, energetic rhythms, modal themes, and powerful percussive writing, mirrors the ferocious intensity of the medieval battlefield. This mature sounding, yet approachable work, is sure to be a favorite of both the musicians and audience.

Awakened Voices Resound is an overture for band written in the winter of 2001-2002. Although there is no direct correlation between this piece and the events of September 11,2001, it is difficult to imagine composing a piece during that time and ignoring the images implanted firmly in one’s memory. This piece attempts to portray some of the newfound patriotic spirit alive since that infarnous day - hence our Awakened Voices Resound!
Awakened Voices Resound follows the concert overture form. The opening statement should be played very majestically, balancing he chords to the bass. The percussion is an important element in the introductory statement, but they should be cautioned to avoid taking as they crescendo. The main theme is first stated in the woodwinds (measure 13), and then repeated with the trumpets measure 21) with a woodwind countermelody. These melodies should be played in a spirited, marcato style. A contrasting, lyrical ‘B” theme appears in measure 29, which quickly unfolds to a low brass and low woodwind return to the “A” theme. he Andante, rubato section is a slight departure from the standard overture form. The woodwind material, starting in measure 49, based on the opening chordal material, while the brass statement, beginning in measure 59, is based on the Allegro “A” theme. 3y incorparating these two contrasting motifs, the Andante, rubato serves as a psuedo-development section in the overall form. he usual recapitulation (measure 70) is followed by the coda (measure 91). The crescendos found in the coda (measures 94, 5, 98, and 99) are intended to highlight the importance of those moving lines, as opposed to simply playing louder.
