This beautiful and sensitive composition was written to celebrate the beginning of UNITED SOUND, an organization whose purpose is to put instruments into the hands of special needs students. The beginning section features optional solo opportunities for flute, alto sax and trumpet. From there the piece adds layers of sonorities as the full ensemble builds to the emotional and powerful final strains.
A mother's love is boundless, never-ending, gentle, and caressing. Written upon the passing of the composer's mother, this composition opens with a pure and simple melodic statement that later opens into the warmth of the full ensemble sound, much like the comfort of a mother's embrace. The opening interval of the minor third is often heard by a child calling "mom-my," and the piece closes with the bells playing this motive. The composer dedicates this piece to the memory of his mother, who always believed in his hopes and dreams. (3:45)

In Greek mythology Aeolus was called "god of the winds." Legend has it he was visited by Odysseus and his crew, and that he provided for a west wind to carry them home. The E-flat major scale is fully exploited in this skillfully composed and orchestrated melody, whose brief excursions into foreign tonal centers are clearly notated with accidentals rather than new key signatures. With grateful ranges and limited technical demands throughout, dramatic impact is achieved through a variety of dynamic levels and non-harmonic tones.

All things. for concert band, is a setting of the traditional tune All Things Bright and Beautiful. The melody, while undergoing quite a few variations and transformations, still remains true to the original lyric quality hymn tune. Initially, the hymn is fragmented and slowly is presented in larger pieces as the work progresses. At the climax of the piece a clear and exuberant presentation of the original tune can be heard. The piece then concludes by returning to where it began by fragmenting the melody again and fading into the distance.

The life story of John Newton is well-documented and his occupation as a slave-trader and subsequent conversion and ordination as curate of Olney, Buckinghamshire, well-known. This incredible story probably makes the words to Amazing Grace! so remarkable, although, Newton can only be credited for the first three verses. This arrangement, although not technically difficult, will require a sustained sound towards the end during its climactic conclusion. It is therefore advisable that the physical demands be understood before commencement so that the correct measurement of exertion can be made throughout the presentation.

The gospel roots of Amazing Grace are explored in this relaxed and inspiring arrangement by John Kinyon. A solo trumpet is spotlighted at the beginning, then is gradually joined by the entire ensemble. Through a number of modulations, this version builds to a touching climax, then ends calmly. Sure to be an all-time favorite arrangement!
Every concert needs a quiet, relaxed piece that allows you to work on phrasing, musicality and sensitivity. This beautiful ballad by Warren Barker certainly fits the bill.

Based on the exquisitely beautiful poem of the same name, by Edgar Allan Poe, Annabel Lee by composer Douglas Wagner is a charismatic work, with the main thematic material reoccurring as a dialogue between the two lovers in counterpoint in both the first and last section. The middle segment paints a musical picture of a cold, desolate, windswept shoreline... a place where this portrait might have been discovered. Wonderfully flowing lines with fascinating harmonic coloration.

(Based on My Shepherd Will Supply My Need) Based on the tune My Shepherd Will Supply My Need from the traditional work “Walker's Southern Harmony,” this sensitive and richly-scored setting provides a wonderful showcase for legato melodies and flowing counterlines. The piece builds gradually throughout, leading to the “maestoso” emotional peak. From there it winds down to a beautifully calm and peaceful close. Very effective!

The word "peace has many connotations: "a state of tranquility or quiet, freedom from war and harmony among neighbors", and more personally, "freedom from disquieting thoughts and emotions". This piece was written in an attempt to express ideas such as these. The form is similar to the composer's earlier Balladair (AABCAA) with a modulation leading to a final extended statement of the opening melody, serving as a codetta.
