A Jamestown Trilogy is a three-movement suite inspired by the story of Captain John Smith and his crew, who sailed from England on December 20, 1606 in three small ships, the Discovery, Susan Constant and Godspeed. They first landed at Cape Henry on April 26, 1607 and then sailed up the James River where, on May 14, 1607, they landed on a site they named Jamestown. In 1608, Smith was captured by the Powhatan Indians. Legend has it that he was considered a threat to the Indians because of his interest in metals and in searching for a waterway west. Smith was sentenced to death and placed on a stone alter to be killed when a twelve year old Indian Princess rescued him. Matoaka, nicknamed Pocahontas (Playful One), the daughter of Powhatan, chief of the confederacy, threw her body across Smith's and saved his life.

Honoring four students who lost their lives, this powerful original work draws its title and its inspiration from poet Kahlil Gibran’s "On Children." This piece is a sophisticated rag on a not-so-sophisticated subject-a literal case of ants in the pants. As the hapless fellow performs his syncopated gyrations caused by the ants, the music quickens and we hear the victim slapping and scratching in an effort to rid himself of the tickly creatures. Brass players will enjoy flutter-tonguing, glisses, and "wa-was" in this highly entertaining tune. (3:05)

Much of Kentucky's musical heritage is steeped in the traditions of Appalachia, an area largely influenced by the settlers from Scotland and Ireland. Appalachian Morning acknowledges these pioneers with a musical walk through the woods and mountains of the Cumberland Gap. In addition to providing solo opportunities for several players, this lovely composition allows for a moment of reflection and lyrical expression on any concert program.

Having already set to music two poems by Hermann Hesse (Stufen and Besinnung), Jacob de Haan has now made a musical arrangement of this famous poem by Kurt Tucholsky. It deals with life in the city, brief encounters, loneliness, people’s yearnings and the all-consuming lack of time. Jacob de Haan’s work can be performed either with a male or female voice, and the use of a microphone is recommended.
One of the three atmospheric little pieces inspired by the magic of historic Pembroke, the pageantry, romance and grandeur of its imposing 12th Century Castle (birthplace of Henry VII) and surrounding countryside. Together they form a delightful suite but movements may be performed individually or in pairs. AB grade 2 - 2.5

Belwin Young Band Grade 2 – 2.5 Duration 3.00
Inspired by the bedroom community to New York City, this vibrant overture musically reflects the juxtaposition of the tranquility of nature in this quiet suburb with the busyness of modern-day life in the city. Set in ABCA form, the composition opens with a trickling melodic line depicting the beginning of the brook itself building to the energetic main theme. Musically exploring that dichotomy, the work unifies to a chorale section and builds to a frenzied conclusion. Highly recommended for concerts and contest alike!

The middle section uses the motif in a relative minor before concluding with a majestic celebratory ending. All instruments have fun, exciting and challenging parts. An ideal programming choice for concert, contest or festival performances.
