Both tragic and inspirational, this work takes you on an emotional roller coaster. In memory of a high school senior, the piece receives its title from the eulogy delivered by his band director. The opening uses a variety of chimes to create a very subdued setting. After a beautiful and grieving opening, the piece moves into a celebration of life. Unforgettable and powerful, the theme continues to develop and transform until the undeniable spirit of youth comes back in triumph. Inspiring!

The Choral Fantasy varies from the Choral Prelude in that it is much freer in form and style. This number opens with a variation of the fanfare that has been traditionally inserted as an introduction and interlude between stanzas. The chorale is then presented in a traditional harmonization by the full band. The second section is in a faster tempo, and is based on statements of the opening motive of the hymn presented in fugal style.

1861 is a lyric hymn/fantasia for young concert bands, based on the beautiful 19th century Anglican hymn “Lead Me, Lord” (written in 1861 by Charles Sebastian Wesley). The hymn itself features a gorgeous melodic line over biting harmonies and striking counterpoint, and provides the pillars for this work. First is a soloistic treatment, followed with a dramatic full band tutti, and finally a section of evocative humming. Throughout are unique textures and colorful improvisitory accompaniments.

The song became a favorite of Scottish soldiers during the Crimean War. The well crafted and expressive scoring will make less-experienced ensembles sound their best.

Superb setting of this all time great tune. - Grade 3.
Frank Ticheli wanted his setting of AMAZING GRACE to reflect the powerful simplicity of the words and melody - to be sincere, to be direct, to be honest - and not through the use of novel harmonies and clever tricks, but by traveling traditional paths in search of truth and authenticity.
I believe that music has the power to take us to a place that words alone cannot. And so my own feelings about "Amazing Grace" reside in this setting itself. The harmony, texture, orchestration, and form are inseparable, intertwined so as to be perceived as a single expressive entity.
The spiritual, "Amazing Grace," was written by John Newton (1725-1807), a slaveship captain who, after years of transporting slaves across the Atlantic Ocean to the New World, suddenly saw through divine grace the evilness of his acts. First published in 1835 by William Walker in The Southern Harmony, "Amazing Grace" has since grown to become one of the most beloved of all American spirituals.
