Category: FLUTE MUSIC Composer / arranger: Philip Wilby
Wilby in smiling mood: zestful, airy and contemplative. The sun shines on soaring phases, piquant sonorities and gently astringent rhapsodic freshness. This three movement concerto has an unsentimental lyricism, melodic invention and eloquently rewarding solo writing that should place it on the short list of major concertante works for the instrument. Light but not slight – a joy to play and hear. 15 minutes
This work for flute trio is in no way connected to the famous work of the same name by Antonio Vivaldi. In his Four Seasons, Mario Valsania sees the changing seasons from a child’s point of view: Spring, out in the fresh air on a bike ride; the unhurried Summer; Autumn and the new school year; and finally Winter, with its Christmas celebrations… This is a composition in a classical style but with advanced, non-traditional harmonies. The composer’s aim was to bring out the full richness of the flute’s range and character—such as staccato and double-tonguing. In Winter, various traditional Christmas carols can be heard.
