Marches are one of the earliest known musical forms. Originally, marches were used for the orderly movement of military troops but entered the realm of "art music" in the 17th Century. Many of the world's finest composers have written marches. Some of these march composers are Byrd, Handel, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Shostakovich, and Vaughn Williams. Perhaps the most well-known march composer was john Philip Sousa ("The March King"), who is credited with composing 136 marches.
A march is a source of enjoyment for nearly everyone. For many, the highlight of a concert is the march, for it often portrays the excitement and energy of a celebration. March for a Celebration was composed in this spirit of celebration.
