The Chugach (choo’gach) Mountains create a scenic backdrop for Alaska’s largest city, Anchorage. Much of this mountain ranges within the Chugach National Forest, which covers 5.6 million acres (roughly the size of New Hampshire). The tallest mountain in the Chugach Range is Mt. Marcus Baker at 13,176 feet. Alaskan Eskimos and Indians have lived in the Chugach region for thousands of years.
