‘Whirlegigg’ is the middle English word for a contraption that continuously spins. A great fascination with many inventors of the medieval period was to develop a perpetual motion machine constantly turning and giving off energy. This idea is particularly apt for this piece. A simple ternary structure gives ample opportunity for both boisterous and reflective material with gyrating accompaniment figures never far away. The machine almost stops near the end, but finally musters one last burst of excitement and energy to bring the work to its close.
Composed as a tender tribute to a lost friend, this was not meant to be a mournful piece, but rather a joyous remembrance of a life ended too soon. The work features two primary themes that ebb and flow as the music progresses. Soaring melodic lines and rich orchestration help bring character and distinction to this effective and emotional piece.

The Wildcat Creek in central Indiana forms a valley connecting all schools in the Howard County area for whom this piece was written. Opening with the percussion section in a stately style, the main theme is first heard in a chorale-like setting. Designed as an extended fanfare, the piece quickly builds in intensity with each subsequent phrase, and culminates in a fast-paced and brilliant sounding ending flourish. Effective as a concert opener.

Wind Sketches is a top quality concert work for wind band in three movements, inspired by the relationship between man and wind. Trade Winds, in the form of a march, is reminiscent of a shanty, conjuring up seafaring and the trade winds. Becalmed, harmonically and melodically almost static, depicts the doldrums. All the more contrasting is Riding the Storm, which concerns the love-hate relationship of people to the winds that he needs and at the same times fears.

The Winds of Power is not a programmatic work, unlike Nigel Hess’s other works for wind band. After a dark and menacing opening, a solo trumpet introduces a theme which will eventually become the centre of the piece and is soon heard tutti in a lyrical form.

This original concert overture is manageable by young musicians, yet it has elements that are relevant to much more challenging literature. Written in a standard overture form, the catchy melodies and rhythms will be sure to delight audiences while keeping the players fully engaged. A brief lyrical interlude adds variety and a moment of repose before returning to the more energized main theme. This is an outstanding choice for a spring concert or a first band festival/contest experience.(2:40)

WINDY WALTZ will introduce your young players to triple metre. Try playing it at different speeds to show how the waltz can be effective either fast or slow. You will no doubt find a speed which will feel right. You could also demonstate the use of “one in the bar" conducting.
The “Windy” of the title is shown partly by the chromaticism at letter A, and also by the crescendo - diminuendo effects at letter C.
The introduction is brief and accented. The melody appears firstly on Clarinets and Trumpet, then on Flute / Euphonium at letter B. Keep the staccato crotchets light and not too short - ask your players to think of a good value quaver. Leaning slightly on the first beat of each bar will help to give the feeling of pulse. Letter C will give good practice in controlling crescendos and diminuendos. A change of key at letter D brings back our first melody on Woodwind and Euphonium. The waltz ends with a brief Coda.

For Concert Band
“Not short on colour, flamboyant flourish, contrast, reflection, passion and celebration, he explores the darker Machiavellian side [of Venice]: the hidden face behind the mask and the dungeons deep beneath the Doge’s palace across the Bridge of Sighs” (Guy Woolfenden, Winds) NcNeff’s five movement homage to the City of the Winged Lion will extend some community bands but the rewards and delights far outweigh the challenge. A very important piece.

This vibrant work opens with a brilliant fanfare highlighted by woodwind embellishments, followed by an exciting and spirited dancelike movement. In the tradition of festival-winner Summer Dances, this composition evolves from a simple theme and develops throughout. A slow, lyrical section provides opportunities for chamber ensemble work before the opening fanfare is reintroduced in a new and refreshing form.
