For Wind Orchestra
The inspiration for WAR OF THE WORLDS came from the celebrated novel about a possible Martian invasion by the former Bromley resident, author H. G. Wells. It is a large scale 20 minute work in five clearly defined sections. A slow, brooding opening with an atmosphere of suppressed menace culminates in a thematically significant solo bass trombone acting as a messenger from a far off place. There follows an out-of-control passage signifying blind panic leading to a fearsome climax which melts into the third section dominated by descending nebulous chords and a glassily nostalgic celeste solo recalling safer times. This is cruelly cut short by four off-stage saxophones representing the invading Martians playing the same repeating pattern while walking to their seats in the orchestra. A violent allegro follows dominated by this motif eventually reaching a percussion dominated plateau where the whole ensemble becomes ‘infected’ before collapsing. The final part features a long impassioned ‘human’ oboe solo (using material already heard on the bass trombone) which increasingly finds warmer support from the ensemble. At the very end of the work the off-stage bass trombone returns and the mood darkens. The Martians may have been destroyed, but what of the future?

For Symphonic Wind Ensemble
A musical tour de force of symphonic scope and resource that shows the composer’s understanding of what the medium is capable of and exploring it brilliantly. Making very few technical compromises, its powerful integrity challenges and rewards the musicality and abilities of quality players (and conductors). A big piece in every sense.

For Concert Band
This immensely practical score intended for intermediate players has a real identity of its own. Shorter and less strenuous than its ‘big brother’, it does share some of its material, structure and especially musical qualities while remaining highly individual. Repertoire of such quality at this technical level is particularly welcome.

The Way to Heaven was commissioned by the Royal Air Force Music Services. 2015 was the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, which took place between July and October 1940, when the courageous fighter pilots of the Royal Air Force thwarted Hitler’s ambitions to launch an invasion on the UK.
The Way to Heaven opens with fluttering woodwind figures and brass fanfares, which build to a climax before a change of key introduces a short quotation for the Polish National Anthem - Mazurek Dbrowskiego. This fades and you can hear the signal to scramble and the throaty sounds of the squadron’s Merlin engines bursting into life before they line up to take off. This leads to the main thematic material of the work, which depicts the heaven-bound flight of 303 Squadron as it climbs to intercept the incoming Messerschmitt 109s. A brief allusion to the Polish national anthem brings the piece to a triumphant close.

Originally “Oh When the Saints” was used as a funeral march in places like New Orleans, Louisiana. The coffin would be escorted to the cemetery with a sombre lament, but on the way back it was custom to break out into a hot Dixieland version. This well known number has been given fresh life by arranger Anton Burger, and features the clarinet/soprano sax, trumpet and trombone in solo roles.
