Composed using a single moderate tempo, Toccata Rhapsodic is a study in articulation and phrasing for second year players. The piece cleverly combines elements of staccato at the same time other players are playing legato phrases, and encourages students to listen for the difference. This can be effective used either as a teaching piece or as an appealing concert number.

For Wind Ensemble
Tranquility was commissioned by Tim and Hilary Reynish and joins the now legendary series of works commissioned in memory of their son William. It was first performed at the WASBE conference in Cincinnati by the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Ensemble conducted by Tim Reynish in July 2009. It is an exercise in quiet playing - a simple folk-like melody starting ppp and building until a climax is reached with a tutti pianississimo chord! The ensemble incantates vocally in canon; a bell tolls and we are reminded of man's inhumanity to man. The movement finally dissolves into bird song over repeated muted brass chords which die away into the quiet mood of the opening.
Written in a grand film score style, this magnificent work opens with a dynamic fanfare featuring soaring brass and woodwind flourishes. Descriptive and evocative with every phrase, including a beautiful slow lyric section, transport your audience on a thrilling musical adventure with this impressive overture!
