Grade 5.0
Frank Bridge (1879 – 1941) was one of the leading English composers of his time. In October 1922 he adapted his popular string quartet Sir Roger de Coverley for full symphony orchestra and Sir Henry Wood agreed, at the last minute, to include it in the last night of the Queen’s Hall Promenade Concerts at the end of that month.
This elaborate and colourful orchestral version has never been widely performed, but has now been brilliantly transcribed by Alastair Wheeler to provide a miniature dance poem for grade 5 level concert band. Bridge’s lively treatment of one of England’s most famous traditional dance melodies will make a fitting end to any concert, with the strains of Auld Lang Syne introduced by Bridge as a nod towards Sir Roger de Coverley’s traditional function as the final dance of a Christmas Ball, as it was in Old Mr. Fezziwig’s party in Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
This original set of variations uses the same Tallis psalm setting that Vaughan Williams used in his Fantasia On A Theme By Thomas Tallis. Popular since its inception, this work utilizes the musical language and style that we have come to recognize as Fisher Tull.

Band directors work hard to build balanced ensembles, but it's often a challenge to keep the trombone section strong. Trombone players carry one of the larger instruments back and forth to school and they don't get to play the “tune” as often as they would like. Help keep them committed to the group by spotlighting the trombone section at your next concert with this enjoyable feature.

A Ragtime Fantasy for Band
Medicine shows traveled around small-town America throughout the 1800s and even into the early 1900s. These were often eleborate affairs with several different musical acts, perhaps a juggler or magician or comedian, and culminating in the presentation of a miracle elixir which became know as "Snake Oil" - for sale for a limited time only, said to cure everything from baldness to death of less than two weeks! What a subject for a piece! Tortuous transformations take the heavy, road weary caravan to the fever pitch and excitment of the Snake Oil Peddler's weaving of malicious spells. Exciting, infectious, a great entertainment for both band and audience alike.
