Basic Band Series.
In this carefully scored setting of the best-known movements from Tchaikovsky's classic ballet, Paul Lavender has made this masterpiece accessible to developing bands. Includes: Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Elves' Dance, Trepak and Waltz of the Flowers.
0 CHRISTMAS CAROLS is an overture style medley of familiar Christmas carols each of whose titles begins with “0”. They include 0 Come Ml Ye Faithful (quoted in the introduction), 0 Come 0 Come Emmanuel, 0 Little Town Of Bethlehem and 0 Christmas Tree. The medley offers a variety of instrumental colors, styles and tempos.
The variety of styles, dynamics, tempos, time signatures and key signatures means that the players must be well rehearsed and alert for the many items “around” the notes, and not just be content to play the note heads. They must watch carefully for tempo changes as indicated in the music and by the director, and observe dynamic changes as indicated in the music and by the director’s left hand movement and the beat pattern size in the right hand. The sign of maturity in a band is how well these tasks are executed.
The pickup note to measure 28 should be in the new “Slightly slower” tempo. The “molto nt.” at measure 65 may be very dramatic and slow the tempo down even more than the new tempo indicated. Finally, the medley changes keys frequently between F and E Concert. Reminder accidentals have been generously provided, but it is up to the players to catch the differences where they are not added.
Here is a refreshing treatment of this traditional favorite that will work great on any holiday concert!
Opening in 4/4 and passing the melody from section to section, the arrangement shifts to the traditional 3/4 meter in the middle section before returning to 4/4 for the final segment. Nicely scored in an attractive setting.
