Echoes of the Silent is a hymn that pays homage to those who perished and to the resilient souls who survived. This music is reverent and reflective, with emotional ebbs and swells and an eventual build to a stirring theme of hope and inner strength. Ideal as a festival or memorial piece, this work is an opportunity for your ensemble to explore softer dynamics, expression and nuance. Dur: 5:05

El Camino Real (The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was commissioned by the 581st Air Force Band and its commander, Lt. Col. Ray E. Toler. This fantasy is based on a series of Spanish folk melodies and underscored by chord progressions used by generations of flamenco guitarists, whose fiery style and brilliant playing have created a vast body of what many consider authentic Spanish music. The music follows a traditional fast-slow-fast pattern, with a first section that is based on the dance form known as the jota, and second contrasting section derived from the fandango.

Programme Notes
Fire in the Blood was commissioned by Dr Stephen Cobb for the 120'“ anniversary of the International Staff Band of the Salvation Army. The piece was composed for the celebration concert where the ISB were joined by several other staff bands from around the world to perform independently to a sell-out capacity crowd at Britain's most famous concert hall The Royal Albert Hall. Fire in the Blood received its world premier at the ‘ISB 120' concert at the Royal Albert Hall on June 4th.2011.
With this piece I wanted to acknowledge music that had an impact on me through my Salvation Army upbringing. When thinking of a title for this piece I had no hesitation than to reflect and re-word the Salvation Army's motto under their famous crest ‘Blood and Fire’. When composing Fire in the Blood I wanted to use three songs of worship that have been prevalent in the Salvation Army's services over a number of years. Opening with Richard Phillips’ setting of Psalm 95, ‘Sing forloy’, the music is vibrant and full of energy, I wanted to capture the spirit of the well known words of Scripture. The music then moves into a more
reflective section that includes Howard Davies’ emotive song melody ’Lord, you know that we love you’and Laurie Klein's worship song ‘I love you Lord’.
A re-statement of the opening Psalm setting follows and this, in turn, leads into a dramatic and powerful finale that combines two pivotal statements drawn from the slower, reflective section: I love you lord, and I lift my voice to worship you, O my soul rejoice and Lord, you know that we love you with a final flourish from Psalm 95: Come /et us sing joy to the Lord!

As the title might imply, this unique composition contains several references to the number 5. For starters, the meter of 5/4 is an obvious connection. More subtle is the prominent use of the interval of a fifth, and also only five different pitches used throughout the entire work excerpt for two measures near the end. Even though Fivefold is composed using single tempo, the variety in textures and moods makes this particularly appealing. Dur: 4:00

"Gaudete" dates back to the 16th century, and was sung as a Christmas Carol throughout the monasteries of Europe. Meaning "rejoice" in Latin, this piece captures the intense passion of praise coupled with moments of calm reverence.
Lush harmonies and lyrical phrases abound in this incredibly expressive work. Approachable by the youngest of bands, this amazingly artistic composition is also more than appropriate for mature ensembles. Outdoor wind chimes and easy effects produce the sound of a gentle breeze sweeping through the auditorium. A fantastic lyrical work that is quite accessible. (1:45)
