Tapestry was commissioned by the Benjamin Franklin Classical Charter Public School Symphonic Band. The title, Tapestry, was selected after quoting the composer, "Our country, in which Benjamin Franklin played a key role in its birth, is comprised of peoples from every walk of life. Together they make a tapestry woven together to make this country what it is today. While this is true of America, it is also true of every other country. The strength of every country is in the people."
 
 
It was the composer's desire to write a work combining "colonial-style" melodies with 20th Century harmonies.
