San Simeon Overture was inspired by the majestic cliffs and forests of central California's coastal region. San Simeon is also home to the regal California landmark known as Hearst Castle, which was the home of publishing baron, Randolph Hearst.

Originally, during the 17th and 18th centuries, an overture was a composition for orchestra used as an introduction to an opera or other vocal works. During the 19th and 20th centuries and continuing today, the overture has a broader meaning. A concert overture, such as San Simeon Overture, is a composition that was inspired by literature, history, or nature.

San Simeon Overture is the second piece composed by Mr. Hommel for the Standard of Excellence In Concert series. San Simeon Overture, like his first piece King Arthur's Coronation March, will allow your beginning band to create a professional sound using very few notes. San Simeon Overture uses only the first nine notes that students learn in Standard of Excellence Book 1.
