The Renaissance Period (1400-1600) brought an explosion of new ideas and advancements in art architecture, science, and philosophy. The period was called the Renaissance (rebirth) because artistic ideals from ancient Greece were rediscovered.
Music played a large part of everyday and religious life during the Renaissance. Instrumental music became increasingly more popular during this period. Medieval dance forms laid the groundwork for the development of more complete forms during the naissance. Composed for court festivals and special occasions, dance music was favored by the royalty and nobility for entertainment.
Renaissance Triptych (trip?tik, a picture or carving in three panels side by side) is a three movement dance suite using the naissance dance forms, ronde, courante, and pavanne.
The Ronde and the Battle Pavanne movements were composed by Renaissance composer Tylman Susato ( 1500-1561). Susato was born in Antwerp, Belgium. He was a prolific composer and music publisher and was also known as the town trumpeter.
The second movement, Courante, was composed by Samuel Scheidt (1587-1654). He was an important organist and composer the Renaissance period noted for his keyboard and sacred vocal works.
